Introduction to Simio

This 6-part video module introduces new users to Simio – the first five videos are instructional and the 6th video is a workshop for you to try on your own. In this module, we develop a Simio model step by step, focusing on the basics of modeling in Simio. While the module barely scratches the surface of Simio’s full capabilities, it will give you a good idea of what modeling in Simio is all about.

Video 01

In Video 01, we discuss the Simio user interface and illustrate the basic model-building process by building a 2-station flowline model.  We also show the default interactive run results (the Pivot Grid).

Video 02

In Video 02, we pick up with the model from Video 01 and illustrate how to use Simio object instance properties to define entity arrival process (with the Source object) and the services processes (with the two Server objects).  We also show the Expression Editor and discuss the basics of constructing Simio expressions.  Finally, we show how to create Experiments so that we can run model replications.

Video 03

In Video 03, we continue with the model from Video 02 and elaborate on the experimentation process. We focus on performance metrics and experiment responses and demonstrate how to create a user-defined performance metric using an Output Statistic.  We define SMORE (Simio Measure of Risk and Error) plots and briefly discuss the question of “How many replications should I run.”

Video 04

In Video 04, we continue with our model from Video 03 and add a “rework server” and show how to use connector Selection Weights to use a probabilistic approach to choose between alternative destinations. We also show how to use the entity Symbol List to change the appearance of entities as they move through the system. Finally, we add a couple of animation elements – a Status Label and a Time Plot and continue our discussion about Simio Expressions.

Video 05

In Video 05 – the final “content video” in this module, we add capacities to the input and output buffers for the Source and Server objects, and show how to use Referenced Properties to facilitate decision-making and basic optimization-style experimentation.

Video 06

Video 06 is a workshop video — something for you to try on your own based on the model developed through the first five videos in this module!
